Speech Topic & Synopses
When considering attacks to critical infrastructure, such as the power grid, oil & gas, and other similar sectors, people often believe nation state adversaries are directly targeting operational technology (OT) assets – industrial control systems – to affect their desire to disrupt a nations ability to provide for its citizens. In fact, the overwhelming majority of critical infrastructure attacks have been perpetrated only after first compromising information technology resources before pivoting to the OT network.
This presentation discusses the history of attacks targeting critical infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on adversaries with a government nexus, describing how these attacks are levied and why they were successful. The talk will focus on how governments, and critical infrastructure organizations need to concentrate on ensuring information technology hygiene is of the utmost importance in ensuring malicious nation state actors are unable to turn off the lights.
