Biography
Jason is an internationally experienced intelligence and cybersecurity leader who possesses 15+ years of experience innovating at the intersection of security operations and technology. Throughout his career, he has published and presented at some the world’s largest cyber conferences, to include Black Hat, RSA Conference, NATO CyCon, InfoSecWorld, and Gartner.
Jason is currently at CrowdStrike where he leads a global team of cyber threat professionals who apply threat intelligence and cybersecurity solutions to combat the world’s most prolific cyber threat adversaries. Prior to CrowdStrike, he was at Deloitte where he led the development of cyber intelligence and cybersecurity programs for large Fortune 500 companies and US Government agencies. Prior to Jason’s entry into the private sector, he served as an Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of Captain and participated in a variety of roles, including assignments at the National Security Agency (NSA), U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM), as well as having served in combat tours overseas.

When considering attacks to critical infrastructure, such as the power grid, oil & gas, and other similar sectors, people often believe nation state adversaries are directly targeting operational technology (OT) assets – industrial control systems – to affect their desire to disrupt a nations ability to provide for its citizens. In fact, the overwhelming majority of critical infrastructure attacks have been perpetrated only after first compromising information technology resources before pivoting to the OT network.
This presentation discusses the history of attacks targeting critical infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on adversaries with a government nexus, describing how these attacks are levied and why they were successful. The talk will focus on how governments, and critical infrastructure organizations need to concentrate on ensuring information technology hygiene is of the utmost importance in ensuring malicious nation state actors are unable to turn off the lights.
