Topic Name & Synopsis
Quantum a paradigm shift in cyber
Quantum is coming and it will be the catalyst for a major technology disruption. Through the sheer processing power it promises, and to solve some of the most complex computing issues of today. The introduction of Quantum computing is at its infancy as the scientists work feverishly towards solving issues to make them production ready. And most believe this is only 5 to 10 years away and it will have a significant impact.
However, there is a dark side to this evolution and impact that quantum will have. It will take the form of breaking current encryption algorithms that are so invasive in our current technology. Encryption that is unbreakable with today’s computing power will be decrypted in mere seconds. This will invoke the threat of mass data leakage, privacy and making confidentiality void.
Despite being 5 to 10 years away there is an urgent need for action. Firstly, to change from legacy encryption to the new post quantum cryptography algorithms will take many years and even a decade for the most complex systems. Secondly, threat actors have been stealing data which has been increasing exponentially, coupled with the current treatment to ignore or reduce the risk due to the fact that the data is encrypted. However, if that information has longevity of 5 to 10 years, then it poses a high risk that the raw data will be exposed.
So in summary, we cannot ignore the quantum evolution and action is needed now to secure our systems, data and services that we all rely so heavily upon.
